O’s Notes: Sean Jelinek leads a sextet from the drummer’s chair where he maintains precise time. There is a strong brass compliment with Marques Carroll (t), Christopher McBride (a sax) and Melvin Butler (t sax) with Kurt Schweitz (b) and Greg Spero (keyboards) rounding out the rhythm section. All of the music was written and produced by Jelinek. They open up hot with “Do I Dare” then quickly settle down with “St Germán”, a warm ballad. They swing on “Pisces Moon” and give us dose of Latin featuring Jelinek on “Resistance” before getting funky with “Common Tones” and “Gettin’ Up In It”. Our favorites were the opener and “Phoenix Rising” in an energetic neobop set.
