O’s Notes: This is a 14-piece ensemble that plays with the dexterity and clarity of a sextet! Trumpeter John Vanore composed and produced the entire session with a neobop, jazz-fusion flair. The brass is well recorded. It is powerful but not ear-splitting which adds to the listening pleasure. Bassist Craig Thomas adds a fine solo on “Substructure”. Bob Howell opens “Restless” with a squawking free solo accented by Don Monaghan on drums before the rest of band comes in swinging hard. These are just a couple of examples of the space Vanore gives fellow musicians! It works to make the set vibrant and creative. We also enjoyed Kettinger’s work on “Dreams” and “Felony”.
