O’s Notes: You’re in for a treat with this four-CD set covering over 50 years of Peterson recordings by Norman Granz on Pablo Records. You will hear Oscar solo, in duets, trios and on up to accompanying Ellington’s Orchestra. We can’t say enough about the wonderful pairings. It starts with a trio featuring Herb Ellis and Ray Brown in 1953 in Tokyo. Other live sessions are captured from Hollywood, Carnegie Hall, Santa Monica, Paris, Montreux, Amsterdam, Chicago, Estonia, London, Los Angeles, Oakland, Copenhagen and Toronto not to mention many studio sets. The accompanying musicians include Dizzy, Joe Pass, Clark Terry, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Toots Thielemans, Milt Jackson, Stan Getz, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Ella, Niels-Henning ¯rsted Pederson, Louis Bellson, Coleman Hawkins and Sam Jones. Oscar plays gracefully and with spirit. There’s a bit more of the latter as he dazzles us tickling the ivory and working the keys mercilessly. He does it almost effortlessly, a true master with an abundance of talented friends!
