O’s Notes: There are 21 selections featuring Duke and his big band in the Swing Era. The sound and picture aren’t great (black & white) but the elegance is easily appreciated. Duke’s musicians were disciplined and polished professionals. Examples are Cootie Williams (t) on “Fly Me To The Moon ” and Johnny Hodges (sax) on “Things Ain’t What They Used To Be”. They provided entertainment for listening and dancing to appreciative audiences everywhere. They defined cool in “C-Jam Blues”! This is an enjoyable excerpt of jazz history.
