O’s Notes: Derrick leads a high-energy octet that has evolved from his 20- year sextet, the Jazz Prophets. Brad Lali (as) and Jason Marshall (bs) join Rob Dixon (ts), Vincent Gardner (tb) and Derrick (t) forming a powerful brass section. Rick Roe (p), Gerald Cannon (b) and Donald Edwards (d) are the rhythm section. The program is mostly new compositions written by Derrick, Vincent and Rob Dixon. They swing hard on “The Melting Pot” allowing everyone to get into the mix without simply going around the horn. The brass harmonies are sweet on “Autumn In New York” with rich big band sound! A taste of calypso surfaces on “Crystal Stair” complementing the swinging bebop that dominates the session.
