Bluebird, 2003, CD
Jazz Ruler Type: Bebop
O’s Notes: This 1966 recording was inspired by a 14-week tour of the Mideast and India sponsored by the State Department in 1963. It was the only such tour sponsored by Kennedy as he was assassinated during the final leg. Ellington and Strayhorn wrote the music shortly after their return from the tour. Also included is “Ad Lib on Nippon” written for their Japan tour in 1964 and 5 previously unreleased takes. It’s yet another glimpse at the legendary Duke extending his jazz mastery with other cultural influences.
