O’s Notes: This set features the works of Earl “Fatha” Hines, the fifth of John Hicks tributes to pianists associated with Pittsburgh. John adds five of his own new compositions that are clearly inspired by Hines’ style. This style has elements of stride, ragtime and jazzy blues. Distinct percussive dynamics mark this style and make these arrangements feel warm. We know Hicks probably has more tributes up his sleeve but in the mean time this one is an enjoyable as well as historic perspective.
