O’s Notes: Two popular flutists, Holly Hoffman and Ali Ryerson are joined by a living legend, Frank Wess. A top-notch rhythm section backs them: Peter Washington (b), Ben Riley (d) and Mike Wofford (d). They live up to their reputations coming together as if they were joined at birth. The tones of the flutes soften the attack of what could be perceived as aggressive bop solos. If your exposure to flutes in jazz is limited, this is an excellent way to appreciate how well they can work. We hope First Date is not their last!
