O’s Notes: The Michael Carvin Experience is the best band the drummer has ever assembled with Yayoi Ikawa (p), Jansen Cinco (b) and Keith Loftis (sax). He bills it as ‘our band’, not ‘my band’. That is a strong indication of the harmony they share as a team. It comes through in the music with a groove that resonates through the entire set especially on “Sayonara Blues”, “Autumn Leaves” and “Night In Tunisia”. They Flash Forward on each of these standards with contemporary arrangements that freshen up old tunes with appreciable twists. It’s like putting Nike’s Air soles on your favorite pair of old shoes!
