O’s Notes: Bassist Harvie S has been showing up more and more on the jazz scene lately as a side man and here as a leader and composer on his own release. He chooses a Latin theme for Funky Cha and works with a core band of Daniel Kelly (p), William Bausch (d) and Jay Collins (sax, fl). The beats are syncopated and funky especially on “C7 Heaven” with Chembo Corniel adding percussion. Harvie displays his talent as an anchor and a soloist. Check his work on “Earquake”. S does an excellent job of maintaining the intensity and drive all the way through this exciting session.
