O’s Notes: Joe was born in Atlanta, studied at Emory and New York University and developed his fascination for jazz in the 1950s-60s. His style has soft elements like Ahmad Jamal on tunes like “Blue Moon” where he draws listeners into the mix as well as his more dynamic approach with a ragtime, stride style. He plays a good mix of originals and fresh arrangements of classics extending the good feeling we got on his first recording, also produced by and including the venerable Houston Person (sax). “Gregory Hutchinson plays drums and Reuben Rogers plays bass on 9 of the 12 selections with Person on 5 of those. Alterman goes solo on the other three songs most notably “I’ll Let You Know” and we enjoyed the swinging feel of “The Theme” and “Snake Eyes” a few of highlights in another fine session from Alterman.
