O’s Notes: Getting Sentimental is a live session recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York during January 1978. The trio is Michael Moore (b), Philly Joe Jones (d) and leader Bill Evans on piano. Moore was actually auditioning for the bass seat vacated by Eddie Gomez. He won the job but only stayed on for 6 months after he saw Evans moving into a different mode of playing. On this night however, all three musicians played well, swinging with strong phrasing in a way that soothed the audience. Jones was there with all of the fills and a solid beat throughout. It’s a nice piece of the Evans mosaic.
