O’s Notes: A trombonist pairing is somewhat unusual but certainly appreciated on Head to Head. The headliners are joined by a tight rhythm section to make a quintet playing 13 jazz classics arranged to highlight the brass. John and Wycliffe duel on the upbeat numbers like Ellington’s “Cotton Tail” and mesmerize us with blended melodies when the pace slows down as on “Skylark”. The formula well throughout a fine set.
