O’s Notes: This is a swinging quartet led by Harry Allen on tenor sax. His partners are John Allred (tb) Joe Cohn (g), Joel Forbes (b) and Chuck Riggs (d). The program consists of ten cool arrangements of classics. We really dug “Cherokee” but it was just one of many strong selections. Cohn shines on guitar and Allen is simply on fire playing with a fervor on “Limehouse Blues” that is exhilarating. They balance the heat with a few warm ballads notably “The Very Thought of You”. Harry makes a serious statement here on a stellar session.
