O’s Notes: An alumnus of the Woody Herman Orchestra, LaPorta (clarinet, sax) gives us a dedication to some of the best swinging big band from Woody. The songs chosen single out many other alumni as well. Sonny Berman, “Flip” Phillips, Ralph Burns, Jimmy Guiffre and Bill Harris are among the many sighted in the liner notes as having strong associations with these songs. John remembers his days with Herman’s band as the ultimate jazz training. As listeners today, we can attest that he learned his lessons well.
