O’s Notes: This DVD is from Lionel’s 1958 European tour. The venue is The Royal Theatre Opera in Liege, Belgium. It’s filmed in B&W but the camera shots are close and from many angles. They capture all of Hampton’s energy and exuberance. Hampton leads a large ensemble playing the vibes and occasionally tickling the ivory and tapping a drum. They swing, play some cool jazz and even some good old New Orleans blues. Pinocchio James sings “Hot Club Blues”. The solos are crisp especially Andy McGhee on tenor sax. Lionel’s showmanship and enthusiasm resonated through the building making this a winning performance.
