O’s Notes: Stanley bridged the bop and cool eras and established a signature on tenor sax that became increasingly popular and even bodes well today. His passionate approach bodes well on ballads where he makes the sax plead like a vocalist. At the same time he retains the chops of a straight-ahead jazz musician. This collection recorded during 1971-1975 on four different albums gives a nice perspective of Stanley’s potion. Among the best is the title track for his 1971 release Sugar.
