O’s Notes: Cecil plays drums, composes and produces some of today’s best jazz. You can find him on many CDs, anchoring the rhythms with a steady beat putting accents where they belong. Here in a quintet with Don Braden (sax), John Hicks (p), Riley Mullins (t) and Dwayne Dolphin (b), Cecil brings some very good music to the stage of New York’s Sweet Basil (now defunct). While Brooks generally stays in the background, “Spontaneous Percussion” is drum solo that lasts more than 5 minutes and captures and maintains your attention all the way through. It show the chops and finesse of the veteran, a master of his trade.
