O’s Notes: The trio is bassist Drew Gress; Nasheet Waits on drums with leader, Hersch playing piano. They are playing live at one of New York City’s premier jazz spots. The sound, the vibe and the audience are all aligned. They start off with a unique arrangement of Monk’s “Bemsha Swing”, then relax a little before opening up on “Phantom of the Bopera” featuring an exhilarating drum solo from Waits. The pattern of alternating pace and feel continues through ten tracks. We prefer the burners but the entire set is good.
