O’s Notes: The black & white video is a sign of the times but the cameraman succeeds in capturing all of the subtleties of an exhilarating performance. This was a part of Cannonball’s European tour in 1963. This peaking sextet was one of the finest. “Angel Eyes” features Yusef Lateef on flute. He doesn’t stop there blowing magic into “Jive Samba” written by the other Adderley, Nat. Next they serve up some bebop with Cannonball burning up the melody on “Bohemia After Dark”. His intensity spreads through the band including drummer Louis Hayes who works up a sweat during an exceptional solo. Yusef opens “Trouble In Mind” on oboe as they relax the pace a bit with pianist Joe Zawinul and bassist Sam Jones featured on solos. Cannonball reminds us that he’s leading the charge on “Work Song” before handing off to Nat Adderley for a trumpet solo. Good music, great musicians made this an enjoyable performance that is easy to digest… Great liner notes too!
