O’s Notes: Best known for his signature song, “Take Five”, which was written by Paul Desmond, Dave Brubeck was a lot more than that. Dave (p) performed with a quartet that included Desmond (sax), Joe Morello (d) and Eugene Wright (b). They became a seamless unit and these two sessions in Belgium during 1964 and then in Germany during 1966 capture them in prime form. Brubeck manages to take the edge off of hard bop and Desmond’s warm tones put the icing on the cake. This cool jazz sound expanded the jazz audience to college students and fans around the world. This DVD gives us a peak at the everlasting warm harmony between four musicians who made a large impact in jazz space.
