O’s Notes: The Mingus Big Band celebrates an appearance by their namesake thirty years ago at the Blue Note in Tokyo, Japan. Whether they are racing through the changes on “Opus Four” or unleashing Craig Handy on “Celia”, these guys swing and generate a lot of energy. This is particularly true on “Meditations”. They found a very appreciative audience and gave them a performance to remember.
