O’s Notes: Veteran sax player, Watson makes his debut on Palmetto Records here but he’s certainly no rookie; he commands respect in all jazz circles. His life has taken a turn as he assumes a role in jazz education. Live & Learn also reflects that change. He plays with confidence on a more relaxed swinging bop groove, mostly his own compositions and cool stuff like “Why Not” and still burning on “I’ve Gotta Be Me”. The quintet is tight and well oiled with Curtis Lundy the anchor, on bass, Greg Skaff on guitar, the daring pianist Orrin Evans and the energetic young drummer, Montez Coleman. They complement each other nicely to make this a strong session.
