O’s Notes: This is more than another Mingus album. It is a peak into the composing of a recording, performed live at UCLA. It contains all of the music, the discussions, arguments, debates and praise as well as the music. And the music was sometimes melancholic, reflective of the mid-1960s moods in Black America. There is also some hot jazz, “Ode to Bird and Dizzy” which gets the spirits flying. Among the eight musicians were Julius Watkins (French horn), Howard Johnson (tuba) and Charles McPherson (alto sax). It’s all original stuff and very insightful.
