O’s Notes: Haines (tb) leads a brassy big band that swings through nine songs. Among the best are “Swing Open” and the flowing motion of “Without You” featuring the honey smooth melody from Ryan’s tenor trombone. But it is not fair to only site a couple on this set, as many of the songs were very good. The trumpets are crisp and the changes are seamless on “A Problem With The Sun”. We liked the bouncy feeling on “Bottom End Shuffle” that is a great example of the fun and spirit that is pervasive throughout the set. A tight rhythm section including guitarist Jim Roberts anchors one of the year’s best large ensemble recordings.
