O’s Notes: Jim plays tuba and fluba, a cross between flugl horn and tuba. The latter has a deep sweet sound. The music on ”Innerplay” is rather symphonic with the inclusion of stings. The unique aspects here are Self’s mastery of the deep brass and placing them up front to lead the melodies. The ten songs are a good variety of popular classics arranged well for this large ensemble especially “The Underdog Has Arisen”.
