O’s Notes: Shawn is swinging on his sophomore effort simply titled Originals II. The significance is that he’s not just regurgitating standards but doing his own thing. That takes courage, talent and strong support. His core band is Matt Nelson (p), Graham Czach (b) and Brad Dickert (d). Shawn leads the way playing alto sax, flute and clarinet for the melodies. They get our adrenalin flowing with the opener “Rice” setting the stage for an energetic set that gets better with each tune especially the second half. Our favorites are “Grimlock”; the reggae beats of “Working Dog”, “Sodor” and “Mr. Strongbow”. The more we listened the more we liked it.
