O’s Notes: Pianist Matthew Fries performs solo for Parallel States, his latest release. This music is mostly swinging ballads with a touch of ragtime thrown in. It is a warm, entertaining session that works in the background and in the foreground for serious listeners. The eight solo pieces are all Fries compositions“highlighted by the bluesy “Positive Attitude”, the refreshing “Garden”; frolicking tunes like “Whirl” and “The Man From Memphis”, our favorite!
