O’s Notes: Whenever The WDR Big Band is involved, there are sure to be delighted listeners. They’ve consistently presented a dynamic, layered, large ensemble that is listenable for hours. Gary Dial (p), Dick Oatts (sax, fl) and conductor Rich DeRosa join the large ensemble to record fresh arrangements of some of Duke Ellington’s lesser-known tunes. While there are a lot of musicians involved in this recording, the sound is free of congestion with the power of the large ensemble surfacing to punctuate the positive. The solos are potent and plentiful featuring many artists helping us celebrate more Duke that we ever knew existed. This is“Rediscovering Ellington.
