O’s Notes: Venerable jazz pianist Cedar Walton takes the stage at San Francisco’s Keystone Korner during December 1977. It was part of a weeklong celebration of the life of the late Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Billy Higgins (d), David Williams (b) and Bob Berg (sax) join Walton along with special guest trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. This date captures Cedar in his prime stepping out from the shadow of the Jazz Messengers. There are six well-developed songs including a few originals notably “Ugetsu”. Walton displays dazzling work on the keys matched by Berg throughout the set with Hubbard shining on “Impressions”.
