O’s Notes: Veteran jazz drummer Roy Haynes is definitely Roy-alty, one of the most engaging leaders on the scene today, still vibrant with over 70 years as a professional! Princes surround him: Chick Corea (p), Marcus Strickland (sax) and Roy Hargrove (t). But Haynes’s core band appropriately titled The Fountain of Youth, features Jaleel Shaw on sax, bassist David Wong and Martin Bejerano on the piano. That lineup suggests a broad variety of jazz and indeed it is from Latin to fusion. Haynes brings it together and makes it sizzle.
