O’s Notes: Bebo is one of Cuba’s most prolific musicians, a pianist, a composer and arranger who has influenced and performed with many notable jazz musicians. This collection includes his Cuban recordings from 1955-1960. The majority of the music was written by Valdes including danzón, mambo, cha-cha, tango, guaracha and his own creation the batanga, a combination of Cuban percussion with jazz brass and reeds. The latter as heard on “Masa Limpa” never really caught on but is very melodic. These 25 tunes are an important piece of Cuban jazz history.
