O’s Notes: Pianist Onaje Allan Gumbs plays with passion and a high level on energy. The groove is an accessible neobop palatable to a wide audience. He mixes newly arranged standards like “Cantaloupe Island” with several originals. While Gumbs’ work on piano stands out, this is a balanced effort showcasing each of the musicians. Among the best tunes are “Destiny” written by bassist Marcus McLaurine featuring Bob DeVos on guitar and the rich ballad “Lament” led by Mark Shim on sax. Obba Babatunde adds vocals on the title track. George Gray (d) and Gary Fritz (perc) keep the beat steady especially on the funky “Stank You Very Much”. It is a stellar album.
