O’s Notes: Pianist Larry McDonough assembles a Quartet with Richard Terrill (sax), Craig Matarrese (b) and Chaz Draper (d). This CD was released in 2005 but we just came across it recently. The program is a very good selection of jazz and pop covers with a few originals thrown in as well. The covers are well disguised by the introductory phases. They swing on “Dame la Mano” featuring Richard and Craig and even more so on “My Favorite Things” with heavy drum accents. We liked the cool mellow arrangement of “Ajar” with a strong sax solo from Terrill. McDonough ads vocals on “They Can’t Take That Away From Me”, “Lady Day” and “Simple Gifts” for a change of pace during the session.
