O’s Notes: Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa leads a trio with Joshua Allen on bass and pianist Martin Bejerano. They play traditional jazz arrangements of classic Cuban songs. The result is a stimulating session of vibrant modern jazz. Of note are “Drume Negrita” and “Me Recordarás”, both featuring exceptional work by Bejerano. Reuben Blades makes a guest appearance to sing “Negro De Sociedad”, the lone vocal track. Berroa has rousing drum solos sprinkled throughout making“Straight Ahead From Havana a winner!
