O’s Notes: Pete McGuiness plays trombone, sings, writes and arranges for large ensembles. We get a taste of all of these talents on Strength in Numbers, his latest release. Dave Pietro (sax, fl) and Jason Rigby (sax, cl) are among the talented team in Pete’s brassy orchestra. The power of the big band is present yet not overwhelming. We enjoyed “Trixie’s Little Girl” with excellent solos from McGinness and Mike Holober (p), “Spellbound” and “Nasty Blues”. Varied pace and shared spotlight make this a good session.
