O’s Notes: This tribute to Clifford Brown swings with all the richness that a big band brings. In this case it is the Mark Masters Ensemble rich with a wealth of talent, especially the brass. Four trumpet players handle Brown’s solos including some sweet harmonies arranged by masters. The featured trumpet player is Tim Hagans who adds several powerful solos of his own. Cecilia Coleman also does an outstanding job on piano as evidenced on “Sweet Clifford”. Brown was only around for a brief period but his music was a transformation in jazz and it is commemorated in high fashion with this CD.
