O’s Notes: Maynard Ferguson was a legendary trumpeter mainly playing traditional jazz but also some contemporary work later in his career. This two-disc set features Maynard on recordings made from the mid-1950s through 1996. While many trumpet players lose a little over time, Ferguson stayed crisp throughout his career. He ripped through solos with a characteristic brilliance that could set a room on fire. This set lives up to its name! All of the best stuff is here along with great support from Shelly Mann (d), Bud Shank (fl, sax), Milt Hinton (b), Jaki Byard (p) and Bob James (p) to name a few.
