O’s Notes: Alto saxophonist Charles McPherson leads a quintet with Keith Oxman (ts), Chip Stephens (p), Ken Alker (b) and Todd Reid (d). The brass harmonies are sweet on the ballads and the grove pops on the burners. Stephens, Oxman, and McPherson contribute 1, 2 and 3 originals respectively to go with three proven standards on The Journey. Chip Stephens provides a dazzling piano solo on “Elena”, setting the tone for a swinging set.
