O’s Notes: This is a compilation featuring great sax players from the 1922 – 1940s. The man who dominated the scene was Coleman Hawkins. There were many imitators but Bud Freeman established his own voice, a bit softer, on tenor and he challenged Hawkins, as did Lester Young. Lester was a part of Count Basie’s band and later backed Billie Holiday. One other notable player was Ben Webster, the man behind “Cotton Tail” with Duke Ellington’s Orchestra. This is a nice snapshot of the swing era.
