O’s Notes: British born pianist George Shearing made a meaningful impact on the jazz world during his 91 years with numerous recordings and live performances. The Many Facets of George Shearing is a duo recording with bassist Andrew Simpkins. It takes place in the Black Forest of Villingen, Germany during 1976. This studio was a hidden gem known by a few stars like Oscar Petersen! Aside from having first class equipment and recording engineers, the studio personnel was most hospitable creating a euphoria that kept the musicians in a favorable state of mind. We hear that jovial spirit in George’s playing. It’s a peacefulness that engulfs listeners as well. That was the magic of Shearing and this is a nice snapshot, ten classic covers to mark his spot in jazz history.
