O’s Notes: Returning to the studio after 4 years, Marcus shied away from standards in favor of fresh new music, an amalgamation of his musical history and experiences. The tunes have hints of funk, R&B, gospel, blues and bebop but they all swing. His work on trumpet is excellent. Marcus makes the notes sing on ballads and scream without scorching, most notably on “In A Sentimental Mood”.
