O’s Notes: Percussionist, educator and composer Julian Gerstin plays a mix of Caribbean, Brazilian, jazz and popular music. The common factors are a syncopated sound that is pleasant and upbeat. Gerstin leads a sextet with Anna Patton (cl), Don Anderson (t), Eugene Uman (p), Wes Brown (b) and Ben James (d). We liked the exotic feel of “I Remember It Differently”, “Child Left Behind” and the mellow title track. Patton’s work is strong especially on “Kaiman Ka Mode” where Anderson matches her effort. This release really could be“The One That Makes You Happy!
