O’s Notes: Mark wanted a Cuban feel for Timbasa and he has it courtesy of Pedro Martinez (congas), Ogduardo Diaz (bongos) and Mauricio Herrera (d), the core percussion trio. They add a large dose of heavily syncopated saucy beats. Pianist Axel Tosca Laugart and bassist Panagiotis Andreou provide the sticky rhythm and a cool canvas for Weinstein. Mark unselfishly let’s all of the musicians strut their stuff on “Watermelon Man” and throughout the session. Laugart is strong on “Milestones” racing through the changes with confidence. The program includes many standards and originals from Martinez and Weinstein. It is a Latin party (timba) for sure.
