O’s Notes: This is a wonderful tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. There is perhaps no one better to illustrate the story than Brazilian guitarist, singer and arranger Toninho Horta. He, like Jobim, brings international character into the mix with Dave Kikoski (p), Bob Mintzer (sax) and Gary Peacock (b). Gail Costa delights us adding vocals to five tracks including “No More Blues” and “Modinha”. Horta adds a couple of his own compositions to the mix notably “Cristina”. The use of strings amplifies the sweet harmony of the bossa nova beats. Among the best are the timeless classics “Desafinado”, “Agua de Beber” and “The Girl From Ipanema”.
