O’s Notes: Transplanted Russian jazz trumpeter Vitaly Golovnev assembles a band with Jake Saslow (sax), Miki Hayama (p), Boris Kozlov (b) and Jason Brown (d). They open swinging hard on “Whose Shoes?” with Golovnev stating the case with a crisp pronounced lead line before sharing solos with Jake and Miki. Then they slip into a loose form on “Some Kind of Blues” before heating up again on the explosive title track. They take it down a notch as Vitaly romances us on “Corner Bistro” then again on “Elegy” and “Waiting”. They wrap up the set with the bouncy “Pretty Far”. The 32-year old Golovnev wrote all of the music and our take is that he’ll be around for a long time with this potion!
