O’s Notes: The music has hints of Django scattered throughout the session, a mix mostly originals, pop and a few classic tunes. We saw these guys live at The Muse in Charlotte, an intimate setting with great acoustics. The house was packed with an appreciative audience, many of who caught them on a visit through the week before. Greg Loughman (b), Finnish guitarist Olli Soikkeli and leader Jason Anick (violin) performed with Ivan Pena (g) live and Max O’Rourke (g) on Travels, their latest release. There is a cool cover of “Come Together”. We also enjoyed the funky “Vessela” written by Jason and inspired by Baltic music. They are an extremely tight quartet that strolls though blazing melodies locked in sync without breaking a sweat. There is no drummer and we didn’t miss it with Loughman banging the box of his bass, strumming and bow bouncing to provide ample amounts of percussion to keep our heads bobbing. “Bushwick Stomp” reached a million hits on Facebook during its first week! It’s a racy tune with lots of buzz. We are enthusiastic about these guys. The album is good but seeing them live is an exhilarating experience!
