O’s Notes: What makes trombonist John Fedchock’s large ensemble unique is their longevity and their collective talents. They are very well knit with seamless changes. They also have a strong sense of swing with very good solos. The final ingredient that impressed us was the inclusion of new music (half of the tunes) along with the typical massaged standards. It makes the program exciting and worthy of repeated listening. Of note were “Alfie’s Theme”, “Up & Running” and the swinging “Elvin’s Empire”.
