O’s Notes: At 76 years old, McIntosh steps into the spotlight with his recording debut as a leader. McIntosh is not a name that many will recognize but his work is already appreciated by many jazz fans. He is primarily a composer but also plays trombone but mostly as a side man. Seven of the nine tracks are his work, some old some new. Tom attracted a strong cadre of musicians both young and old to support his effort. Kenny Barron (p), Stephan Harris (vibes), Benny Golson (sax) and James Moody (fl, sax) are among the proud crew who help deliver the message. The opener, “The Cup Bearers”, starts with a bop groove, evolves into a cool blues and concludes like a warm ballad. It typifies Tom’s writing, something that is worthy of inclusion on your buy list. By the way, he says there is more to come!
