O’s Notes: One night in San Francisco during 1976, Sonny came on stage with Ed Kelly (p), Ray Drummond (b) and William Richard Winters (d). The place was Todd Barkan’s Keystone Korner. These guys demonstrate the furious burning that is associated with Left Coast jazz and this legendary establishment. Sonny shows both passion and dexterity on “The Shadow Of Your Smile” making it his tune. Then he takes it up a notch on “Lover Man”. Stitt bounces between tenor (where he cooks) and alto saxes (where he sooths) keeping it crisp across ten classics.
